Martin Zatz received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology, and his M.D., from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. After an incomplete Residency in Psychiatry at Yale he came to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) as a postdoctoral Fellow in 1974 and started working on the regulation of melatonin synthesis in the rat pineal. He remained at the NIMH, where he subsequently turned his research attention to the chick pineal.
