Mastering Mentorship
A Practical Guide for Mentors of Nursing, Health and Social Care Students

May 2013 | 224 pages | SAGE Publications Ltd
This book is an essential guide to mentorship in health and social care. The chapters focus specifically on the eight Nursing and Midwifery Council domains for the preparation and training of mentors. A rich range of real-life case studies are included in every chapter, to demonstrate the challenges and dilemmas of mentoring in practice. The chapters cover a range of settings, including community nursing, school nursing, acute care, social work and biomedical science.

Learning objectives, chapter summaries and reflective questions are also included to help readers reappraise what they have learned.

Mastering Mentorship will be essential reading for both those preparing to become nurse mentors at post-registration level and those already qualified to mentor.

Index

This is a well written and easy to read book that provides a very clear overview of mentorship in health care. It is neatly broken down into accessible chapters based on the NMCs standards for mentorship in practice which is a boon for both instructors and students. I particularly liked the case studies provided for each chapter, these added context and provided inspiration for further thought. Students within the group have also found the reflective activities helpful in the development of their portfolios (an assessed component of the course)

Mastering mentorship is an essential guide for healthcare practitioners who are involved in the development of new students within the field of health and social care. Written with ease and accessibility few other books provide such an essential and effective guide for those who are given the responsibility ensuring that new students are equiped appropriately.

A sound book, but not keen on the layout. Is rather text heavy.
